Local area
When it comes to sun, sand and surf, there's no place like Tauranga! It is New Zealand's favourite beachfront destination… and Orca playground!.
At the heart of the city is the bustling Tauranga harbour, providing safe anchorage for boats of all shapes and sizes in a host of protected bays and marinas. The harbour also serves as the region's popular summertime, sheltered water sport location, premier cruise ship port of call and frequented feeding grounds for Orca and a host of other marine wildlife such as sharks, rays, dolphins and seals.
Downtown Tauranga is a vibrant hub of activity. It's a great place to meet the locals, have a chat, do some shopping and explore the colourful coffee culture and tapestry of restaurants, bars and cafés that line the picturesque Strand Waterfront.
Getting around Tauranga is 'easy as', and every visitor should make their way down to the relaxed, iconic beach lifestyle environs of Mount Mainstreet and Mount Maunganui, affectionately known by locals as 'The Mount'. This much loved landmark - a 252 metre high, dormant volcano - is a popular local attraction with important historical and cultural significance. Enjoy a stroll around the scenic base track or set your sights higher towards the summit for spectacular views of Bay of Plenty. Wether you go exploring in Downtown Tauranga, walk-about in Mount Maunganui, cruise the Mount Mainstreet shops, relax on the beach, or revel in the many activities and attractions on offer, there's always plenty to see and plenty to do in Tauranga.
