Step back in time with a trip to the Catlins, the stunning south-eastern top of New Zealand, famous for spectacular coastline, bush walks, waterfalls and wildlife. Jill and Ali invite you to stay at their homely B and B, The Catlins Retreat.
The Catlins Retreat is an historic villa in Owaka, the main town for the North Catlins Area and only 1 hours drive from Dunedin airport. This historic building was built by the community to attract a doctor to the area over 100 years ago. The result is a beautiful character villa in central Owaka within walking distance to all the shops and amenities.
Guests will stay in either one of the two grander rooms at the front, or what used to be the Doctors surgery. Each room has a queen and a single bed, a private bathroom, a fridge, TV and tea and coffee. Continental breakfast is available on request.

Local area
Owaka is a small rural town with a warm welcome and everything you need. There is a 4 Square shop, garage, pub, cafe's, second hand book shop, gift shops, museum and information centre, all within a short walk of the Catlins Retreat.
The surrounding area is famed for spectacular coastline, beaches, bush walks, waterfalls and wildlife. There are numerous short, easy bush walks to stunning waterfalls, beaches, Cathedral Caves and Nugget Point Lighthouse and for the more adventurous horse riding, kayaking and the Catlins River walk.
Sea lions are frequently seen on nearby beaches, but the endangered yellow eyed penguins and rare mohua are harder to spot. At dusk long-tailed bats and glow worms become active.
Extend your stay and explore the South Catlins area too, with its famous fossilised trees at Curio Bay and dolphins that play in the surf at Porpoise Bay.
