Omaka Lodge

Forgotten World, Central North Island

Located only 7kms from the friendly township of Taumarunui, down the incredible Forgotten World Highway, lies Omaka Lodge, a boutique bed & breakfast venue in the heart of New Zealand’s Forgotten World.

The short drive out from town follows the Whanganui River and is a beautiful scenic tour at any time of the year. At the end of a tree lined sealed driveway, you’ll find Omaka Lodge and its beautiful mature gardens. Well positioned on the crest of a hill, with magnificent views of Herlihy’s Bluff and Mount Hikurangi, and a peek of Mount Ruapehu, this wonderful venue offers total privacy and seclusion.

Situated amidst working farmland, the Lodge and its grounds are surrounded by the sights and sounds of everyday country life, where sheep and cattle dot the rolling green-pastured hills and valleys that echo to the melodious sound of never-ending birdsong. Omaka Lodge is set on several acres of picturesque grounds, and we welcome groups or individuals to visit our beautiful and expansive country gardens by appointment.

If you’re thinking of a boutique wedding venue or event, Omaka Lodge could be the picturesque setting you seek, offering a unique combination of a beautiful home with several accommodation options, large grounds, and spectacular mature gardens with wonderful countryside views. We have several wedding packages available, suitable for groups of 6-50 people. Whether you simply want to visit us to exchange your vows, to use our stunning gardens for your wedding photos, or to hold the entire event here, we can work with you to ensure your special day is one to remember.

When it comes to accommodation, we have several options available at Omaka Lodge, including private rooms, a luxurious new self-contained apartment, and three non-powered campervan sites. All our private rooms are peaceful and relaxing, with quality furnishing and bedding, and ducted air-conditioning for year-round comfort. Each room offers storage space for your belongings, with wardrobes, drawers, shelves and hanging rails on offer. The very large guest-share bathroom, with spa-bath and mains-pressure shower, is just around the corner from the bedrooms, and when sleep calls, the comfortable beds and fine linen ensures a relaxing night’s sleep.

Relaxing at Omaka Lodge is a true delight with so many options on offer indoors or out. Swim or soak up the sun; play croquet or tennis; read a good book or magazine; enjoy a garden ramble or doze indoors; there really is something for everyone at magical Omaka Lodge. Slightly further afield, the surrounding Ruapehu District offers many attractions that may pique your interest. There are so many ways to explore and enjoy New Zealand’s Forgotten World: drive the unforgettable Forgotten World Highway; hop on a Forgotten World RailCart and experience the hidden countryside by rail; boat, canoe or kayak down the Whanganui River to the iconic Bridge To Nowhere. If adventure tourism is your thing, there are cycling, walking and hiking trails within easy reach, not to mention the mountains of the Tongariro National Park and its world-class ski fields. Your hosts, Scott (who did sales & marketing in his previous life) and Chris (who spent years in hospitality and interior/landscape design) are happy to help with any enquiries you may have.

At the end of the day, whatever you’ve experienced, Omaka Lodge welcomes you home. Enjoy a delightful dinner (if prearranged), soothing shower or spa-bath, and relax into a sumptuous bed. The beauty and warmth of Omaka Lodge will provide rest, satisfying and restoring a weary traveller. Omaka Lodge, a tranquil oasis amidst New Zealand’s Forgotten World.
